本講座將以工務司署設計的公眾街市，作為分析香港現代主義建築的切入點，探討這種公共建築的設計，如何逐漸從西方古典形式過渡到現代風格。二戰後香港重建為政府帶來巨大財政負擔。工務司署因應戰後的社會和財政狀況，興建花費較少的現代風格建築，是深思熟慮的決定。本講座將整理公眾街市的發展過程，從簡單開放式街市，到小型室内街市，以至現代化市政大廈，有系統地審視香港的公眾街市如何適應社會需求而變得現代化。

The talk uses the Public Works Department-designed public markets as a point of entry to analyze the gradual transition from classical to modern architecture style. The construction of modern-style buildings, which required modest capital expenditure, was a thoughtful response to Hong Kong’s post-war social conditions and financial reality. The talk outlines the chronological development of public markets, from simple open-type market sheds and small enclosed market houses to multi-story modern buildings containing a full range of amenities; systematically tracking the social imperative trajectory that modernized the public market.
