Residency program “Safe Harbor”
Belgrade, Serbia
September 2019 - March 2020
Application deadline: September 1, 2019

Institute for Urban Politics (IUP) is an activist collective formed in 2010 under the name Ministry of Space. We have initiated and participated in numerous urban struggles concerning the common use of unused public or private spaces, collective actions against the harmful development projects and have done a great number of research studies and policy proposals for democratization of urban governance and development. Ministry of Space has grown and transformed into an Institute for Urban Politics, with intention to further intensify production and dissemination of knowledge and creation of policies in areas of participative urban planning, democratization of use of public spaces, urban commons and housing.

Through the exchange within SAFE HARBOR program, we offer our experience, knowledge and wide network of associates that could be relevant for your work. Aside from that, we will cover travel costs (up to 320 euros), provide work space and accommodation (a flat in the wider center), as well as a moderate weekly allowance of 50 euros that will be given on a weekly basis.

The residency period varies from two weeks to one month, and has to take place from September 2019 until March 2020. After being selected, if necessary, IUP will provide an official invitation letter for applicants to secure additional funding through external grants or visa, if needed.

What is the SAFE HARBOR?
The Residency program “Safe Harbor” is dedicated to activists, practitioners, scholars and multidisciplinary authors who focus their work on the phenomenon of the city, ranging from the social and spatial complexity of the contemporary city to opportunities towards citizen-driven development and the right to the city.

Institute for Urban Politics invites through this program urban practitioners to visit Belgrade and work here for a few weeks. Travel and accommodation expenses and moderate per-diems are covered. The program provides a space for reflection and development of one’s own research, along with exchange and contribution to the local struggles, and opens the channels of communication and collaboration with the local researchers and activists' scene.
Who are we looking for?
There are no limitations concerning age, gender or geographical provenance of the applicant, and certainly no discrimination based on disability, sex, racial, religion or ethnic origin during the selection process.
The applicant should:
(1) be committed to working for progressive social change and social justice within an urban context;
(2) be able to commit to at least 2 weeks residency period;
(3) clearly articulate the residency statement.
Applicants are expected to use their time in Belgrade:
(1) to contribute to specific issues and tasks in the Institute's field of interests with their set of skills and interests; or
(2) to focus on their own work they were not able to do at their home country/institution, or that demands certain distance; or
(3) to provide themselves with some quality and well deserved rest (yes, too often our work is tiring and demanding, so it is completely fine if someone wants to take time off for themselves).
The program is based on the „open-end“ residency model, which means there are no expectations of developing and realizing a new project. What we would ask, however, is a short presentation of resident’s work and exchange with interested local public.
