Lab Activity & Safety Volunteers

**NOTE - we are at capacity for Lab Activity volunteers with the exception of volunteers who are affiliated with Faculty/Student/STEM groups such as Discover E, Faculty of Math, AlbertaSAT etc. please specify what group you are volunteering with.
If you are not affiliated with a group, please consider signing up as a General Volunteer/Delegate Guide and/or a Role Model and Networking volunteer.**



Come and help WISEST deliver the 2023 SET (Science, Engineering and Technology) Conference on Saturday November 25, 2023! This fun day will show grades 10-12 high school girls and gender diverse students the many opportunities that exist for them in science, engineering, and technology. Please see some of our volunteer roles below:

LAB ACTIVITY LEADERS

What: Lab Activity Leaders plan, organize and present a hands-on lab activity for Conference participates (delegates)! Lab Activity Leaders are responsible for reviewing their lab procedure, requesting any required materials from WISEST, and leading the activity during both the morning and afternoon activity sessions. Each Lab Activity Leader will have a few Assistants to help them.  

Who should sign up: Undergraduate, Graduate, PhD Students, researchers, faculty members, lab assistants, lab coordinators or STEM outreach organizations/leaders. Volunteers should be comfortable with facilitating or presenting content. 
Time commitment: Volunteers can expect to commit to several hours of lab planning and preparation and are expected to complete Online Safety Training, mentorship, and ally training and an in-person lab test-run evening prior to the SET Conference (date TBD). Lab Activity Leaders will need to be present from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm on the Conference day.

LAB ACTIVITY ASSISTANTS

What: Lab Activity Assistants help to deliver a hands-on lab activity for Conference participates (delegates)! Lab Activity Assistants will help during both the morning and afternoon activity sessions. Lab activity assistants will help activity leaders prepare for the activity, help facilitate the delivery of the activity and assist in clean up of the lab or classroom space. 

Who should sign up: Undergraduate, Graduate, PhD Students, researchers, faculty members, lab assistants, lab coordinators or STEM outreach organizations/leaders
Time commitment: Volunteers are expected to complete Online Safety Training, mentorship, and ally training and an in-person lab test-run evening prior to the SET conference. Lab Activity Assistants will need to be present from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm on the Conference day.


SAFETY COORDINATORS

What: Safety Coordinators will be in the lab activity to make sure that safety protocols are being followed. These individuals should be experienced with Chemistry Labs and be comfortable taking control in case of a spill, fire, or evacuation. The Safety Coordinator will also take the responsibilities of the Lab Activity Leader.

Who should sign up: Chemistry Graduate or PhD Students with access to the undergraduate general chemistry labs
Time commitment: Volunteers are expected to review relevant lab procedures/safety documents and complete Online Safety Training prior to the SET Conference. Safety Coordinators will need to be present for the in-person Lab Activity Run-through event. Safety Coordinators will need to be present from 8:00 am - 3:00 pm on the Conference day.
