無人機在臺灣的應用領域相當多元，市場日漸普及、產值增長快速、服務 逐漸成熟。未來無人機除了性能提升，酬載能力與續航力增加，應用日趨廣泛之外， 也將與諸多新興科技進行更緊密的整合，其中包括人工智慧、物聯網、感測技術、 大數據應用、精準農業（Precision Agriculture）、行動裝置與邊緣運算（Edge Computing）及物流系統等服務。

近年來政府積極推動再生能源的布建，以達成2025年再生能源發電量佔20%之目標，其中以太陽光電裝置容量占66.3%最高，累積設置目標20 GW（地面17 GW及屋頂3 GW，1GW為10億瓦），相關的設備維運將耗費大量人力及費用。隨著時代演變，無人機的應用領域與日俱增。除了娛樂、新聞報導、緊急救災等傳統用途，現在更經常應用於重要基礎設備的維護管理，以取代效率低、成本高，還具有一定安全風險的人工巡檢。

另外傳統風力發電機保修檢測作業皆由人工完成，辛苦爬上數十公尺高的發電機組後，忍受強風在危險環境下作業。近幾年來由於無人機技術成熟，國內外電力公司將這項技術運用在日常作業中，大幅提高作業安全性。

本活動目標將建立具有國際競爭力之本土團隊， 結合國內外業界硬體零組件供應鏈，進行關鍵技術研發與系統整合應用，同時培育相關人才從事無人飛行載 具之研究，以凸顯研究成果對於台灣/全球的實質影響力。
