StewardSHIP Week 2024 Service-Learning Projects
Service-Learning Opportunities.  Your current options include:
1) Wednesday April 17, 2024 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Goats on the Quad & Environmental Wellness Program.  We will pick up the goats from the campus farm, and bring them up to the quad for a couple of hours. They will be ambassadors for the campus farm and will help us advertise all of the events that we have planned for StewardSHIP Week.  We will need ~4 people to assist with this event.

2) Monday and Tuesday April 22nd or 23rd Teaching Sustainable Agriculture at the Campus Farm to Kindergarteners  https://forms.gle/rGXBATLsoQzwTpxc6 You can walk from campus to the campus farm. Details are on the link.  Please note a short training will be held on Friday April 19, 2024 at the campus farm.

3) Wednesday April 24  10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Campus Farm Spring Planting & Cultivation Work. Help with planting, bed prep, and other tasks as we continue to prepare for another year of excellent growing.  Rain or Shine - as work can be completed in the high tunnel!

4)  Thursday April 25   @ 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  Shippensburg University Earth Day Celebration on the Lehman Library Quad.  We need volunteers to help with set-up for the event, to help with educational/information stations and with games for GBLUES Elementary Students (K through 5th grade). Grade level partners from the school will come out from 12:30 to 2:45 in a rotation.  Then we need to clean-up.  So we will ask for two shifts - 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

5) Friday April 26 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Cumberland Valley Rail Trail - Ship Composts Sign Installation. We will meet at the big rock between the Rail Trail and the Spiritual Center (near the campus Chilling Plant) so we can assemble the sign (it was manufactured for us - really nice), dig the holes, mix the concrete and get the posts set and staked until the concrete hardens up.  Need 4-5 people for this task.

6) Saturday, April 27 Ship Shape Day and Stream Clean-Up 8:45 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Sign-in at the Fireman's Activity Center on Orange Street (Next to Ship Bev) before 9:00.  T-shirts will be handed out and you will receive instructions and materials and a team (if you don't want to go to the stream) for clean-up.  For those interested in the stream clean-up you will be assigned a "reach" of the stream and materials to collect trash that you remove from the stream and bank.  Wear old clothes and shoes that can get wet if you want to go in the water. (Sign-up below)

Some reminders...
When you participate in an outdoor field-based service-learning activity... What should you wear?

1) Wear sturdy shoes with a good tread/traction (no open toe, no flip flops, etc.) that you don't mind getting dirty.  Hiking shoes are great, sneakers are Ok.  Just remember you could get muddy/wet.

2) Wear long pants (old jeans). Trust me - you want this protection. You need to protect your legs from anything and everything!

3) Plan for the weather... A coat/rain coat/heavy sweater with layers and a t-shirt. Should you get warm you can always peel off layers.

4) Wear a hat to cover your head and keep sun out of your eyes.

5) Bring a pair of work gloves if you have them.

6) Use sun-screen for all exposed parts and hand sanitizer frequently.

7) Use some bug spray.  Pants/long sleeves are good - as your first and best defense.

Other items:
Bring a water bottle.
