Planting Roots workshop

Call for Submissions for participants: 


The initiative- 

Planting Roots is a one day multidisciplinary arts workshop for Black youth ages 10-14 in the Nova Scotia areas. 

This is a Roots of Connection inaugural workshop to offer Black youth an opportunity to learn about selves and community in an alternative, relaxed artistic setting. 

The workshop will be a day of creating and learning about art. The morning will begin with focused sessions on 3 different artistic mediums and the afternoon we will create a piece based off of the skills learnt from the morning sessions.

It will take place at Neptune Theater Oland studio from 9am-5pm on January 7th 2023. 

About Roots of Creation :

 Roots of Creation is an emerging collective of Black Nova Scotian theatre artists, educators and community members providing accessible theatre creation and performance programs to youth. With a focus on Black and other IBPoC youth; Roots of Creation strives to provide communities with multidisciplinary arts programs delivered through a collaborative, accessible lens with a focus on decolonization. Delivering an alternative way of learning about self, community and cultural history.


What does the day offer?:

The morning will consist of the students participating in a workshop of their choosing; Music creation, acting, dance, writing and clothing design. 

In separate groups students will learn about their chosen course. 

In the afternoon the whole group will come together to create work using what they learned early that day. 

Lunch, and refreshments and cover for transportation will be provided. 


Who can apply:

Planting roots is open to Black youth ages 10-14 in the Dartmouth, Preston township, Halifax, Nova Scotia areas who are interested in learning about arts within their community.

We are open to submissions from Black youth of all identities.
