Equity Summit: A Spirit of Unity

As valued members of our community, the Lake Oswego School District, the City of Lake Oswego and the Lake Oswego Chamber of Commerce are pleased to invite you and your family to our first virtual Equity Summit: A Spirit of Unity. This event represents another step forward in ensuring equitable access, inclusion and opportunity for all our community members.

The morning will begin with keynote speaker Erin Jones who will share her story and talk about the power of inclusion. We will then break into three sessions where diverse voices will lead participants through conversations around inclusion, diversity, equity and access. We thank you for joining our Summit and being an essential part of our continued efforts to promote a “Spirit of Unity” in our Lake Oswego community.

Will Attend Keynote: Erin Jones has been involved in and around schools for the past 26 years. She has taught in a variety of environments, and in some of the most diverse communities in the nation. Last fall she was a candidate for the State Superintendent of Public Instruction. She received recognition at the White House in March of 2013 as a "Champion of Change” and was Washington State PTA’s “Outstanding Educator” in 2015. Session One: 10:25-11:10 (*Choose one)

The Living Room: The Living Room strives to create a supportive and welcoming community for and with LGBTQ+ youth in Clackamas County through advocacy and education. Using the youth/adult partnership model, we offer accessible programming and resources that encourage the personal growth and development of leadership skills among LGBTQ+ youth and their allies. The Living Room will be discussing their services and then leading an open forum on topics that participants would like to discuss. Bring your curiosity on leadership, identity, and more!

Bob Horenstein: The Mainstreaming of Antisemitism: This presentation will examine what constitutes antisemitism in its various forms (from the far right and the far left) and what’s behind the alarming rise of antisemitism in the US, including here in Oregon.

Marshall Cho: Silent No More: Dispelling the "Model Minority" Myth: Bigoted language such as "China Virus" and "Kung Flu" has fueled an epidemic of violence against Asian Americans in recent months. Come and listen to our Asian American youth discuss the impact of stereotypes of being "Model Minority," "Perpetual Foreigner" and "Silent Minority".

Danielle Thompson and Michele Barnette:Literacy - Equity Considerations for Dyslexia and All Struggling Readers: The IDA-Oregon Equity in Education Committee was born as a reaction to these recent statistics: 66% percent of all 8th graders in Oregon cannot read at grade level, and for Black students, that number rises to 86%, for Latinx students it is 80%. In addition, 99% of all English Language Learners never learn basic literacy skills. It looks like most students are not learning to read very well, but Black and Brown children are, by a large gap, suffering the most. Most startling of all, these are numbers that have not significantly improved in 40 years. In this session, we will explore what these statistics reveal about access to good reading instruction, and additional systemic barriers to Literacy. We believe that Literacy is a civil right. Our mission is to advocate for and empower individuals, especially those with dyslexia, Until Everyone Can Read.

Bill de la Cruz: Get it Together! We have all fallen apart in some way or another during this last difficult year. Whether you have been impacted by racial injustice, the pandemic, your relationship with others or with yourself, this workshop is for you. A path forward is to understand the impacts of anger, fear and isolation and how to move through them to regain wholeness and peace, together.

Adam Johnson: GSA Student Panel: The Lake Oswego Junior High School Gay, Straight Alliance Club will present a student panel to talk about the equity work in which they have embarked this year.

Jon Onishi: Looking Back at The Past to Make Sense of the Present: Lessons Learned about Bias, Stereotypes, and Fighting Prejudice/Racism From My Father’s Experience in the Japanese American Internment Camps.

Trevino Brings Plenty: Contemporary Native American Issues: This workshop will look at contemporary Native American issues in the US and will be a primer on how to begin to engage in the national dialogue on Native Americans.

City and LOSD Leaders: Connecting Our Lake Oswego Community: Learn more about the city of Lake Oswego’s opportunities to work towards social justice. Let's connect LOSD and the city.
