Former Mets general manager Billy Eppler suspended for 2024 season for IL manipulation
Former New York Mets general manager Billy Eppler was disciplined.

On the 10th (Korean time), the Major League Baseball Secretariat announced in the name of Commissioner Rob Manfred that it would place Eppler on the ineligible list until the end of the 2024 World Series.

Eppler will not be able to work in the major leagues for the 2024 season unless the commissioner grants him a special pardon.

Eppler suddenly resigned from his position as general manager of the New York Mets in October of last year. It was later revealed that he was under investigation by the Major League Baseball office.

The so-called 'fake IL', which places players who are not actually injured on the injured list, was a problem.

Although there is no minor option, it is a representative bad practice and practice in the major leagues that clubs openly practice to exclude players who have been pushed out of the league from the roster without going through the waiver process.

Major League Baseball said its investigative department interviewed more than 36 officials, including Eppler, and reviewed relevant documents and electronic records, concluding that Eppler had improperly used the injury list.

They explained the reason for the disciplinary action, saying that Eppler intentionally manipulated the player's injury situation by submitting related documents for the purpose of inappropriately using the injury list throughout the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

Eppler said in his statement, “I participated fully and transparently in the Major League Baseball Office’s investigation process and accept the decision.”

Meanwhile, the league secretariat added that, as a result of the investigation, this action was Eppler's arbitrary action and there was no intervention from the team owner or high-ranking officials.

They announced the closure of the case, saying, “There will be no further comment on this matter as the investigation has concluded.”

After graduating from the University of Connecticut, Eppler began his front office career by getting a job as a scout for the Colorado Rockies in 2000. He moved to the New York Yankees in 2005 and was promoted to director of scouting. In the process, he was recognized for his abilities by discovering Bartolo Colon, Eric Chavez, Corey Wade, Freddie Garcia, Russell Martin, and Andrew Jones. He was promoted to assistant general manager ahead of the 2012 season.

In October 2015, he was appointed as the Angels' general manager, finally becoming the top decision-maker in the front office. He dreamed of reaching the top by recruiting Shohei Ohtani, Justin Upton, Anthony Rendon, and Andrelton Simmons, but the team fell to the bottom of the rankings and was fired after the 2020 season.

He got his second chance with the Mets in November 2021, but resigned from the position without even completing the four years of his contract.
