HCOP $2,500 Scholarship Application
The Hawaii Pacific Basin Area Health Education Center and Health Careers Opportunity Program is designed to empower economically or educationally disadvantaged students from the Hawaii and the US Pacific Basin to enter the health workforce or be admitted to health professional schools.

Targeted professions include: Medicine (other than nursing); Dental Assisting; Dental Hygiene; Healthcare Administration; Substance Abuse Counseling; Community Health Worker; Public Health; Emergency Medical Technology; Health Information Management; Massage Therapy; Medical Assisting; Medical Laboratory Technician; Long Term Care Coordination; Occupational Therapy Assisting; Pharmacy; Pharmacy Technology; Phlebotomy; Physical Therapy Assistant; Physician Assistant; Psychology; Radiologic Technology; Respiratory Care; Social Work; Surgical Technology; Optometry Assistant and all other health professions other than nursing (covered under other funding).

Qualified Applicants Must:
  • Applying/accepted to a health professional school
  • Demonstrate a consistent and sincere interest in pursuing a health profession
  • Possess a minimum, cumulative 2.9 GPA
  • Must be educationally or economically disadvantaged (see 2024 poverty guidelines below)
  • Must be willing to mentor a future student interested in health professions

Submission requirements:
  • Completed Applications Must Include the following and can be sent to the Hawaii AHEC: ahec@hawaii.edu
  • Application form completed in full;
  • A transcript representing at least the last six months of school (unofficial transcript is acceptable)
  • Two letters of support (At least one of them must be a Professional reference from a teacher or supervisor);
  • ATTACH your CV or resume
  • Applicant must submit a typed essay using a 12 point font, 250 to 500 words (1-3 pages).

Applicant may pick any of the following questions:
  1. Describe why you think Hawaii has a health workforce shortage and how your goals to be a healthcare provider will create a positive change.
  2. Using an example from your own life, explain why the study of and promotion of health is important.
  3. If you could cure any health issue in the world, what would it be and why?
  4. What makes you interested in the health sciences?
