If the surname is a popular surname (i.e. Smith, Jones, etc.) then more information would be required to located the specific soldier. If the ancestor did not serve in the army/navy but as a federal/confederate government employee, (telegraph operator, teamster, etc.) information can still be obtained. If you don't know the answer to a question you can skip it.
