RSVP: The Psychology of Perpetrators of Mass Atrocity
Join Advocates for Human Rights and the WLA International Committee for an exciting conversation regarding the psychology of perpetrators of mass atrocity in WCC 3009. We will be joined by three amazing panelists. Juan Pablo Caldéron-Meza is a Colombian attorney working at the Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Court. Alette Smeulers is a professor at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands and works at the Law Faculty and the University College of Groningen. Her most important publications on the psychology of perpetrators of mass atrocities include an article on how ordinary people transform into perpetrators and a book chapter in which she presented a typology of perpetrators. Thijs Bouwknegt is a historian of mass violence and transitional justice at the NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies (part of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences) in Amsterdam. Since 2003, Bouwknegt has attended and monitored over 150 atrocity crime trials at the ICC, international tribunals (for the former Yugoslavia, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Cambodia and Lebanon) and various jurisdictions in Europe and Africa. Lunch will be served.
