The overall goal of GRIT is to promote diversity and inclusion among the graduate programs in STEM at the University of Chicago through recruitment, retention, and sustainability. To do this, GRIT members need to be comfortable exploring and identifying their own implicit biases and pursue training in diversity and inclusion by attending workshops, the GRIT retreat, and reading relevant literature on the sociological structures of marginalization and discrimination. Importantly, GRIT strives to create a culture within our team of honesty and transparency, accountability, and empathy. To build this culture, GRIT members are expected to maintain an open mind discussing issues of discrimination and bias, be receptive to criticism,  and use grace and humility when listening to others. Under no circumstances will personal attacks, call out culture, or shaming be tolerated within GRIT. GRIT members are expected to hold each other accountable for each other’s actions and correct each other with care and empathy. In line with the above statement: Are you prepared to commit to personal development and working to achieve GRIT's goals in the university? *
Would you be willing to learn about the sociological structures of marginalization and discrimination?

Do you consider yourself an inter-sectional feminist? (Feel free to research the term) *
Please read through GRIT's Constitution linked above. We require GRIT general body members to actively contribute to GRIT's mission. The participation requirement can be met by attending at minimum 5/10 General Body Meetings or by joining one of GRIT's teams and helping plan retention events. Are you able and willing to be an active member of GRIT? *
Why do you want to join GRIT? *
Why do you think there are so few women, minorities, lgbtq+ individuals, and people of diverse abilities in STEM/high ranking positions in science and academia? *
One of the strengths of GRIT is that it shares the burden of advocacy work across marginalized and majority groups. To do this effectively, GRIT members need to identify and leverage their privileges to be an advocate for others. Can you identify any privileges or advantages you have as a result of your identity? How can you use these privileges to help others? *
Please feel free to use this space to express any questions, comments, concerns that you may have. Additionally, please write any further information that you would like the GRIT admissions representatives to know (e.g. background in diversity and inclusion such as courses taken or other relevant life experiences).
Are there any specific goals or programs you want to execute or bring to GRIT? *
