Introduction

An Emergency Approval for the use of Asulam for the control of bracken in England only has been granted.  This authorises the application of asulam by helicopter or ground-based equipment for bracken control in England from 1st July 2023.

The Emergency Approval document is available at: https://www.brackencontrol.co.uk/asulam.  To meet the requirements of Appendix 3 (Stewardship) the Bracken Control Group (BCG) is required to collate information about sales and usage.  This form to record purchase details is part of this process.

In addition, ALL USERS of Asulox MUST ensure that details of how, where and why the product is applied are provided to the Bracken Control Group.  A form is available in various formats on the BCG’s website at: https://www.brackencontrol.co.uk/asulam/records


Details of the Emergency Approval

  • Applications of the product can be made from 1st July 2023 up to and including 11th September 2023.
  • To protect birds, application should take place after 1st August 2023 or as late in July 2023 as possible.
  • Low drift nozzles must be used and spray aimed away from water.
  • When applied using ground-based equipment, spraying MUST not take place within 5m of static or flowing water; this separation can be reduced to 1m if a ditch is dry at the time of application.
  • For aerial application, an untreated horizontal buffer zone distance to surface water bodies or to other non-target environment of 90m MUST be used; low drift nozzles such as RD1000 Pencil Jets or Delavan RD 'Raindrop' type nozzles MUST be used.
  • A maximum concentration of 1 part product to 4 parts water MUST be observed.
  • Livestock MUST be removed from the treatment area and kept out until 1 month after application.
By 27th October 2023, all unused stock MUST either be disposed of or returned to the place of purchase. ONLY full unopened cans can be returned.  Details of any returns will be collated by the distributor and passed to the BCG (e-mail: info@brackencontrol.co.uk).
