What is an Organic System Plan (OSP)?
An OSP is a foundational component for USDA Organic Certification that describes how your farming, handling and/or processing practices meet organic standards. The OSP should clearly explain your operating plan, including information on crops, animals, harvests, sales, records, soil-building practices, pest management, health care, pasture, and any other practices related to organic production.
What will I learn at this workshop?
The workshop will be two-fold, starting with a history and background on USDA Organic Certification led by the Swette Center's Executive Director, Kathleen Merrigan. Dr. Merrigan served as U.S. Deputy Secretary of Agriculture and helped draw up the Organic Foods Production Act of 1990. Following the discussion on the history of USDA Organic Certification, Inge Vogelmann will provide an in-depth introduction and workshop-style practice of creating an OSP, including Q&A about the process. Inge has a wealth of knowledge and over two decades of experience in organic inspections. This will be part one of a two-part series on the OSP.
