What is SNOEZELEN?
“Snoezelen means SNUFFELEN = See and explore; DOEZELEN = Relax, is a room equipped with rich sensory material. Wonderful place, made of light, sounds, colors, textures and aromas, where objects are colored and made available to be touched and admired. They enchant those who see or touch them by deflecting their stress and aggression. The primary senses (sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell) are stimulated, giving a sensation of pleasure, favoring intellectual development (Amcip 2009).”
Taking into account the most current evidence and the Covid-19 pandemic, which required people to be confined at home, it became evident that this is a very important topic in order to provide strategies and transmit knowledge to caregivers of people with pathologies, whether for example children and young people with disabilities or elderly people with dementia, who cannot travel to the indicated places for their rehabilitation or technical monitoring, or to reinforce the intervention carried out.
On the other hand, most caregivers tend to present high levels of overload and emotional exhaustion, since the act of caring for a person with certain pathologies is a complex process. This overload can lead to the development of psychiatric symptoms (which can compromise the ability to provide care).
Snoezelen at home is therefore an important approach both to prevent regression in the person with the pathology, and to reduce the burden on caregivers and give them the comfort they so badly need.
Therapeutic interventions through Snoezelen can bring numerous benefits, such as sensory stimulation, promotion of relaxation, development of certain skills, increasing interpersonal relationships, trust in others and promoting communication, as well as preventing or intervening in exhaustion and burnout.
CONCEPT...
Snoezelen, as a philosophy of therapeutic intervention with people with multiple disabilities, emerged in the Netherlands in the 1970s as a source of exploration and relaxation. It provides comfort, through controlled stimuli, and offers a large amount of sensory stimuli, used individually or in combination with the unique effects of music, sounds, light effects, soft vibrations, tactile sensations and aromatherapy.
The Snoezelen environment promotes self-control, autonomy, discovery and exploration, and positive therapeutic and pedagogical effects. Using a multisensory environment allows therapy to be unique to each person.
Monitors, assistants, parents and caregivers of people who benefit from this environment.
