2024 Rockin' Around New Mexico Grants: Critical Minerals, Volcanoes, and Earthquakes July 10-12, 2024
Rockin’ is a workshop for certified, NM K–12 teachers who are interested in augmenting their understanding of geoscience. This workshop can be taken for professional development or for New Mexico Tech Master's in Science Teaching (MST) graduate credit. This year, we will be based out of Grants, NM and participants in our workshop will explore the importance of critical minerals, tour the eruptive center of the Zuni Mountains, learn about the NMBGMR state-wide volcanic hazard assessment and NMT Seismological Observatory earthquake monitoring, and how to prepare for geology-related hazards. No previous geologic experience is necessary. Teachers should be able to walk one mile in arid conditions.
To take this course as part of the Rockin’ Around New Mexico and the Master of Science for Teachers (MST) program at New Mexico Tech (NMT) (course number EDU 5810), fill out this form and contact MST Teacher Programs Coordinator Leslie Clark at (575) 838-3096 or email leslie.clark@nmt.edu to register. A 20% NMT tuition fee applies for NMT-MST students. Teachers who register for the NMT-MST class receive preference over those taking the course for professional development.
A $60.00 materials fee is required for professional development teachers, payable to Rockin' Around NM. The $60.00 fee will be reimbursed to you through our grant after the course is completed. Please don't pay the $60 fee until you find out that you are in the class. Professional development teachers may be put on a waiting list to make room for NMT-MST teachers. If you pay the $60.00 and are placed on a waiting list, you will be reimbursed. Teachers that don't show up for the class may not be reimbursed. NMT-MST teachers do not have to pay this materials fee. The MST program covers these costs.
As part of Rockin' Around NM, all teachers do pay for their own travel and lodging. Reimbursement is available to New Mexico teachers for Rockin' travel and lodging if teachers travel more than 35 miles one way to attend. The 20% MST EDU 5810 course fee is not covered by our grant.
