Dear Arete Fellow Applicant:

Some efforts to improve the world can be much more impactful than others. Smallpox eradication, the abolitionist movement, germ theory, and the Green Revolution demonstrate what's possible when people come together to solve pressing problems. But these opportunities to do good are few and far between. At the other end of the spectrum, many well-intended initiatives are ineffective or even counterproductive. Doing good better is one of the defining challenges of our time.

Recognizing this need, Harvard's Effective Altruism group established the Arete [AIR-uh-tay] Fellowship to equip students with the knowledge to do good in the world more effectively and the tools to think critically about their career ambitions. By the end of the semester, Fellows have access to in-depth coaching, career connections, and unique opportunities to help others as part of a happy and meaningful life. We look forward to learning with you.

We are committed to building a diverse cohort of fellows. There is evidence suggesting that underprivileged individuals tend to underestimate their abilities. We do not want the application process to dissuade potential candidates and we strongly encourage interested students to apply regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, ability, concentration, and background. We evaluate applications blind to everything in this form (including your name) except for the essay questions. However, in some cases, we will break ties on marginal applications by class year, diversity, or demonstrated interest.

Below is the fellowship application, which closes on September 17, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. CDT.

Please feel free to ask questions about how to make your application stronger by reaching out to us at vanderbilt.ea.fellowship@gmail.com. We like to see applicants demonstrate interest by contacting us.

Cheers!

Please answer the essay questions thoroughly, but do not feel the need to write more than 200 words per question (though you will not be penalized for going over). We aren't looking for any particular answers. We select applications purely based on clarity and evidence of thought.
What kind of impact would you like to have on the world? What causes would you like to support with your time and money? Why?
We are interested to see how you reason about difficult moral questions (and we aren't looking for any particular answer). Do you think there is a moral difference between an act and an omission that have the same consequence? For example, how do the actions of killing and letting-die compare? What are the implications? *
Please describe one occasion when you changed your mind in response to evidence. What was challenging about your experience? How did you overcome it? *
Due to current circumstances, we will most likely be holding the fellowship over Zoom. However, pending approval by the university, would you be interested in attending small, in-person sections of around 5 to 6 fellows?

The Arete Fellowship is not a passive activity. It requires active engagement, curiosity, and discussion. Many times this will involve topics that fellows care deeply about and hold strong opinions on. At times, you may find yourself in disagreement with others. Recognizing this, we ask that you to pledge to maintain and contribute to a fellowship environment that is welcoming to all participants, respectful of diverse perspectives, and considerate of each other's feelings.
