Southport under Lancashire County Council ? - a survey of local opinion

- an attempt to get a clear understanding of opinion in Southport

It has been suggested that Southport could leave Sefton Council and come under both the much larger Lancashire County Council and West Lancashire District Council. One complication is that Southport pensioners would no longer have free use of the Merseyrail Train network which runs from Southport to Chester and into Liverpool. Another complication is that free bus travel for those 60 -65 would end.

80% of council services would be delivered by Lancashire from Preston and 20% by West Lancs Council from Ormskirk.Fire and police services would change too. Current Council Tax rates would remain broadly similar. Ainsdale is not automatically included in the proposals suggested most recently by Conservative and Labour representatives- partly because it may be moved under separate proposals out of the Southport Constituency (see https://tinyurl.com/3tr9v522)

THE SPLIT SEFTON ALTERNATIVE- Southport Liberal Democrats and others have always favoured breaking the existing Sefton into two separate councils within the existing Merseytravel area.This would mean Southport councillors having a bigger say in Council decisions AND current pensioners bus and rail passes would be unchanged.

There would be two separate council -one based in Southport ( including Formby) - the other based in Bootle & Crosby BUT both remaining in the Merseyside police and transport area.There would be no change in police or fire services and all current pensioner entitlements would continue.
