This is an Open Call form for sessions for Limmud Rhine, which takes places within the Memory Futures project funded by the European Union. For more information, on Memory Futures and Limmud see below (English only). If you would like to submit the session please complete the form by 31 October. Final decisions on session selection will be made by the Programming Team.

Limmud Rhine is a three-day evening programme full of history, culture, stories, language and much more discovering Rhineland Judaism yesterday, today and tomorrow! What is Rhine/Rhineland Judaism? Where does it come from and what role has it played in broader Jewish history? What are the current challenges and opportunities and how will it evolve in the decades to come? What do we speak? What do we eat and drink? What makes us distinctive? Are we different?

Offener Aufruf: Limmud Rhine (26-28 November 2022, Zoom)

Dies ist ein offener Aufruf zur Einreichung von Beiträgen für Limmud Rhine, im Rahmen des von der Europäischen Union finanzierten Projekts Memory Futures. Weitere Informationen zu Memory Futures und Limmud findest Du unten (nur auf Englisch). Viele Sessions werden auf Englisch sein, aber wir wollen versuchen die linguistische Diversität unserer Region widerzuspiegeln. Bitte melde dich bis zum 31. Oktober via unser Formular hierunter an. Die endgültige Entscheidung über die Auswahl der Vorträge wird vom Programmteam getroffen.

Limmud Rhine ist ein dreitägiges Abendprogramm voller Geschichte, Kultur, Stories, Sprache und vielem mehr, um das rheinische Judentum gestern, heute und morgen zu entdecken! Was ist das rheinische Judentum? Woher kommt es und welche Rolle hat es in der breiteren jüdischen Geschichte gespielt? Was sind die aktuellen Herausforderungen und Chancen und wie wird es sich in den kommenden Jahrzehnten entwickeln? Was sprechen wir? Was essen und trinken wir? Was macht uns unverwechselbar? Sind wir anders?

Wenn Du dir nicht sicher bist, worum es geht oder ob Du eine Session geben sollst (es muss
nicht unbedingt etwas mit dem rheinischen Judentum zu tun haben), nimm einfach Kontakt

Memory Futures
The project was inspired by research examining the role of memory in imagination and future thinking. Recent neurological and neuropsychological studies reveal striking similarities between remembering the past and imagining or simulating the future, including that the same part of our brain is responsible for both our memory and for dreaming and imagination.

It is not only true that the more we can remember the more we can understand, but also that the more we remember, the more creative and bold we can be when anticipating the future. Conversely, as studies of amnesia patients indicate, the inability to remember the past results in an inability to imagine or anticipate the future. Remembrance, therefore, is a crucial prerequisite of imagining our common future in Europe and the future of the European Jewish community. Thus Memory Futures will aim to frame Holocaust remembrance,
research and education in a way that helps target audiences understand how the Holocaust impacted European Jewish Communities and also learn about the Jewish culture in Europe today as well as to imagine and co-create the future of the European Jewish Community.

Limmud
Limmud is an independent, non-denominational Jewish organisation that prides itself on creating spaces and events that are welcoming to people of all backgrounds and beliefs. Its main ethos is to create grass-roots learning events that encompass a multiplicity of opinions, methodologies, and modalities. Limmud’s model is innovative in itself in that it employs a system of 10 values which underpin each event. The values (e.g. Diversity, Empowerment, Participation) encourage horizontal, grass-roots structures and promotes civic engagement.

They also create spaces for respectful and nuanced conversations as an antidote to rising populism (Respect, Community and Mutual Responsibility, Agreeing to Disagree). Developed 40 years ago, the model of Limmud has been adopted in over 70 countries around the world, creating inclusive, open communities of learning.
