AMSA Mental Health KYGG: Our Stories Callout
This is a callout to all medical students to share their stories concerning mental health with everyone (anonymously) to show others who are suffering from the same problems that they are not alone.
Medicine is a challenging profession, from the long hours of intense study to bearing witness to confronting events and everything in between. These factors contribute to increased rates of burnout, anxiety and depression seen in medical students. There is a longstanding culture within the medical profession that rewards infallibility and perceives mental illness as a weakness. However, we are not alone as medical students in our struggles with mental health.
Later in 2019, AMSA Mental Health has decided to publish the 3rd version of Keeping Your Grass Greener, a guide which assists medical students in maintaining their health and wellbeing. We would love to share your story openly or anonymously through this publication to help break the stigma surrounding medical students and mental illness.
To quote Rocky Balboa: “Life's not about how hard of a hit you can give... it's about how many you can take, and still keep moving forward.”
Our overarching theme is our own stories surrounding medical student mental health. To get your thoughts going, below are a few ideas that can help you choose that story:
- Situations which caused burnout.
- Situations which lead to depression and/or anxiety and panic attacks. eg. traumatic events, or personal tragedies.
- Stress management, self-care, and/or coping strategies i.e. support from friends and family
- Accessing or challenges with accessing mental healthcare
