Kennett Consolidated School Board Positive Petition
Please read and sign the positive petition that was created by Chester County Marching Forward's Schools Committee in collaboration with Chester County parent groups. It is important for you to sign the specific petition of the school district in which you reside. If you have reached the wrong district, you can find the positive petition for your school district here: https://www.ccmarchingforward.org/schools.html

PETITION TO THE KENNETT CONSOLIDATED SCHOOL BOARD to MAINTAIN, PROMOTE and EXPAND POLICIES AND STUDENT INSTRUCTION RELATED TO ACCEPTANCE, DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION (DEI), and SOCIAL and EMOTIONAL LEARNING (SEL).

WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, HEREBY PETITION the Kennett Consolidated School District to continue programs for Acceptance, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion of ALL students regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, gender or gender identity, physical or cognitive ability, and cultural differences, as well as Social and Emotion Learning aimed at helping our students cope with feelings, set goals, improve interpersonal skills, resolve conflicts, think differently talk about their challenges and build self-esteem.

These programs are NECESSARY to administering an education effectively: Basic child and brain development teaches us that a child will only learn at their best if they feel safe and secure.

They are also FISCALLY RESPONSIBLE…a study done by the Rand Corporation states that “If student performance gaps based on race-ethnicity or family economic status were closed for future cohorts, each annual cohort in Pennsylvania would gain $3 billion to $5 billion…these equate to approximately $83,000 to $125,000 in present-value dollars per African-American and Latino student.” This will translate to significant tax dollars for all of us.

Last, DEI AND SEL PROTECT AGAINST MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS. According to the Jed Foundation, a nonprofit that protects emotional health and prevents suicide for our nation's teens and young adults, “Mental health is significantly impacted by our unique perspectives, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, genders, sexual identities, faith traditions, and dis/abilities. Feeling understood, accepted, and supported is an important protective factor for our mental health, while discrimination, stigma, and mistreatment can contribute to emotional struggles.”

Our schools MUST be a safe and brave space for our students, and ALL students must be invited into the work of inclusion to keep each other safe for a stronger learning community. Building understanding and empathy through education is key to this work, at all ages. We cannot allow classmates to harass, insult, ignore, or worse, psychologically or physically threaten a student based on some perceived or actual difference, be it race, ability, nationality, religion, gender identity, or anything else that "others" them.

Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) is NOT Brainwashing. Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is NOT Leftist Indoctrination. This is NOT a political or social "position”. The benefits are indisputable, and it is the right thing to do. They provide our children with basic tools needed to navigate the world. Our children will not succeed in today’s diverse society if they simply "tolerate" one another. They must be taught to understand and appreciate their differences so that they can achieve even more TOGETHER!

Embracing DIVERSITY is ALWAYS a good thing, especially during times of disturbing levels of racism.

Addressing EQUITY problems is ALWAYS a good thing, especially during times of increased levels of economic instability.

Being INCLUSIVE is ALWAYS a good thing, especially during times of tragic levels of mental health problems.

We support and applaud KCSD, especially the School Board, Superintendent, administrators, teachers, students, and parents for their work for in DEI and SEL, and we ask them to strengthen and continue this work for years to come.
