Tree Pruning for Fruit Production Workshop
Sunday October 10, 1-4 PM
MLK Park, 4055 Nicollet

Spend an afternoon with Eric North, Assistant Professor of Urban and Community Forestry at the U of M (https://forestry.umn.edu/people/eric-north) and in partnership with the Minneapolis Park Board Forestry Department, learning how to prune a variety of fruit trees to increase production. The goal of this workshop is to form and educate a team of Kingfield neighbors in the planting, maintenance, harvesting, and decisions involved in caring for and nurturing our urban orchard which currently includes 4 pear, 3 sour cherry, 3 plum, 8 apple, and a handful of service berry trees (and more planned to be added next spring!)

There is no cost to participate in the workshop, however, KFNA (the Kingfield Neighborhood Association) is asking for a commitment of about 20 hours per participant next year in our orchard. Tasks will include: planning meetings, plantings, pruning dates, ongoing watering, disease monitoring, and hosting harvest and educational events for the broader community. Participation in this workshop, and on this team, is limited to 15 residents.

At the workshop we will spend about 1.5 hours of indoor classroom time and about the same amount in Kingfield's Community Orchard, located in Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park, 4055 Nicollet. The indoor classroom will be socially distanced and participants will be required to wear masks. Masks will be optional outdoors if you are vaccinated. All tools will be provided.

If you have any questions please contact Sarah Linnes-Robinson at sarah@kingfield.org or 612-791-7081.
