Ängsbacka is a working community that hosts self-development courses and festivals all year long. At our organisation all four dimensions of sustainability (the economic, ecological, social and cultural ) are seen as mutually reinforcing. Attention to each is essential for holistic and healthy community development. Here, people learn not only through courses and workshops offered, but most importantly through the immersion experience of sharing the sustainable lifestyle incorporated into everyday life in an intentional working community. At our organisation we focus more on social and cultural sustainability in our everyday activities. However, with this project we also want to bring the
ecological sustainability and climate change increasingly to the focus. Thus we have initiated this current ESC project called "Climate Awareness".
During their service, the volunteers will have chance to practice organic good growing, take action to increase biodiversity at our park and garden, research about climate compensation, biodiversity restoration, reach out to the local community, support our festivals and thus learn hands on about the ins and outs of a large-scale course center. All this is giving our volunteers skills that could be used later in their working lives.
Their main tasks of our volunteers will be to support our organic garden with producing food for our volunteers and
guests. They will help to design how to restore more biodiversity and create edible landscapes at our site - in our garden, park and Forest Dream ecovillage building site. We will create a nursery for perennials to plant together with the volunteers. They will also take part in reach out activities around our garden: workshops, garden walks and showcasing our activities to restore biodiversity and produce local food sustainable. Moreover a great part of the project is to set up in cooperation with another organization for a climate compensation scheme that we will market to our event participants to
decrease the ecological footprint of the travels. They will also take part in developing and implementing environmental policy for Ängsbacka. Our volunteers will develop and practice leadership skills by coordinating other, short-term volunteers.
