CHAMPS Wants to Hear from You   Questionnaire for Foster and Kin Families
The CHAMPS campaign brings together a diverse group of partners who share an interest in making policy improvements nationally and in states to strengthen family-based foster care in order to drive better outcomes for children and youth. CHAMPS provides a policy playbook and related tools to assist and encourage policymakers in championing reforms in their communities. All aspects of CHAMPS are grounded in research and based on input from foster and kinship families and young people with lived experience in foster care.

With this questionnaire, we hope to hear from foster families and kinship caregivers. Responses will inform the ongoing work of the CHAMPS campaign. We also would like the opportunity to use some responses as quotes in our materials.  The questionnaire asks for your email in case we want to follow up on your responses and/or get your approval before using a quote. Your email is safe with us. We will NOT share it with any third party and you will not be added to any listservs.

Did your agency provide added supports to families to help during the pandemic?
Clear selection
What type of support did you receive, or would you have wanted to receive, to help with fostering during the pandemic?
As a foster parent, what’s one type of support you rely on most from the agency or social worker?
What’s the most challenging type of support to get? How or why is it challenging? How would having this support help the children you care for?
What’s an example of something important you learned at foster parent training and why?
What’s one special skill or characteristic that a foster parent should have? How have you been able to use that skill to help children in your home?
If you were in charge of foster care in your state, what would you do to help foster parents be even better caregivers? Why would this make a difference for children?
One CHAMPS recommendation is for child welfare agencies to have parent advisory boards to advise the agency on policy and practice.  Parent advisory boards can be made up of foster, kin, birth and adoptive parents.  If you are currently involved in a parent advisory board, what works well and what are the challenges? If you are not, are you in favor of this recommendation? What are some of the issues you think parents should advise the agency on? How might a parent advisory board make a positive difference?
Have you recommended foster parenting to others? If so, what did you say was a reason to do it?
Do you give CHAMPS consent to create a quote based on your responses?  [We contact you first and will attribute quotes only to first names, such as Jane, foster parent, Ohio.] *
