2023 Not In Our Town Princeton Unity Award Application--Deadline Wed. May 11, 2022
Not In Our Town Princeton (NIOT) is seeking nominations of students for the 2023 Unity Awards. Β The Unity Awards recognize students for their efforts to advance racial justice, equity, literacy, and address white supremacy, in the Princeton schools and beyond. This can include organizing programs and events as well as longer term commitments.

NIOT encourages students to self-nominate and also welcomes nominations of students by teachers, counselors, school administrators, and staff, and adult community members. Students who are self-nominating need to also submit the name and contact information for one adult non-relative who is familiar with their work. This requested info is at the end of the application.

Eligibility: Princeton High School juniors and seniors who have not already received a Unity Award while a PHS student; Princeton Middle School, and Princeton Charter School 8th graders. Students who were recognized during last year's award ceremony as a member of a group that received a Unity Award are still eligible for an individual Unity Award.

This year's awards ceremony will take place at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Princeton on TBD.Β  It will be a hybrid in person/zoom event. Winners will be recognized with a certificate and a monetary award.

Please take our Mission Statement into consideration when describing your/the student's work:

"NOT IN OUR TOWN PRINCETON is a multi-racial, multi-faith group of individuals who stand together for racial justice and inclusive communities. Our focus is to promote the equitable treatment of all, and to uncover and confront white supremacy β€” the system that facilitates the preference, privilege and power of white people at the expense of non-white people and pits racial and ethnic groups against each other by upholding hierarchies based on proximity to whiteness.

Our goal is to identify and expose the political, economic, and cultural systems which have enabled white supremacy to flourish, and to create new structures and policies which will ensure equity and inclusion for all. In our commitment to uncovering the blight of white supremacy on our humanity, we take responsibility to address it and eliminate it in all its forms through intentional action, starting with ourselves and our communities."
