Welcome to The STARTS Award, an opportunity to exhibit your artwork in a professional gallery or to perform your spoken word on a professional stage.

If you are currently serving, ex-Service, or a family member of someone in the military, then you are eligible to apply.

There are two categories - Spoken Word and Visual Art. You can enter both categories or just one, however, you can only be selected as a winner of one category. There will be up to 5 winners selected for each category.

All entrants should be available on 17th October 2024 to be in Manchester for the whole day.

WINNERS' GUIDELINES (please read carefully and tick the box at the end)

Date for the diary:
Winners should be able to attend the following events on 17th October 2024 in Manchester -
(i) a live show at Matt & Phred's jazz club from 3pm to 5pm, which will showcase the performances by the winners of the Spoken Word category, plus a musical set from a professional jazz artist
AND
(ii) a Private View to launch the exhibition at  Comme Ca Art gallery at The Lowry Hotel from 6.30pm to 8.30pm, which will include a piece of artwork created by the winners in the Visual Art category, alongside other professional artists’ work..

Winners’ Travel and Accommodation:
We are able to contribute up to £100 per winner for travel/accommodation expenses. The timings of the events have been arranged to enable most to travel there and back on the same day. 

Refreshments:
There are several places to buy food near the venues. We recommend that you bring additional snacks and water with you to keep you going through the day.

Creative Coaching and Final Pieces:
All winners will create a new artwork/written piece for the showcase events on 17th October, and will receive professional coaching and guidance via zoom.
