Hooked on Humanities and Company O are seeking Expressions of Interest in two Professional Learning experiences. 'Lives: A dramatic look at History' is designed to offer teachers hands-on and fun-filled dramatic rehearsals to demonstrate the effectiveness of using drama to drive history.
The sessions include the following:
Session 1: The anguish of leaders
This session will begin with a performance of an excerpt from the now (in)famous abdication speech made by Edward VIII, in 1936, in which Edward, the King of England - and of the British Empire! - put love before the throne. This will be followed by an analysis of the dramatic events that led to Edward’s abdication by stepping into role - whose side will you be on? The activities in this workshop will highlight how to use drama purposefully and powerfully in the classroom. The focus of contestable historical perspectives will highlight how the lives of leaders can be explored.
Session 2: Their final words
This session will begin with a performance that takes us to the heart of WWI showing us how great drama is born from the drudgery of trench warfare. This session will explore how character and circumstances (context) are strong drivers of drama - in particular, how people - soldiers in this case - can act and react so differently in the same set of circumstances. WWI will be explored through the lens of the individual in this session as we explore soldiers’ final words, often made profound by their seeming insignificance.
