SoC Alumn* Poll - 2024 Edition
Hello friends, colleagues, and members of the SoC community!

I'm Kit, and I coordinated the SoC Alumn* program in 2023. I would like to invite you to express your input regarding the 2024 program. You are also invited to the Town Hall which will be held online and in Zurich on Feb 3, 2024, at 10:30am. You can receive the link by taking part in this survey.

Please note that unlike before, the responses are not anonymous. This is because I have combined many questions, including questions related to programming. I welcome all feedback, but with this survey, I firstly want to make sure to get your feedback on critical aspects of the 2024 programme. As always: I am happy to connect with you via email or whatsapp as well!

Many thanks for your attention and energy!
Best,
Kit

First, please confirm that you are an alumn* of the School of Commons by typing the year(s) that you were part of the program. *
What is your email, name, and pronouns? We will send you the zoom link for participation in the Town Hall to this email. *
Did you attend any of the SoC Alumn* Events? *
Are you satisfied with Kit continuing to coordinate the SoC Alumn* program?

Here is the video introduction from Kit from Spring 2023 (5 minutes of video; description includes the transcription). After that original proposal was discussed in the 2023 townhall, the focus was revised to really emphasize local, in-person connections, so that became the driving force behind the 2023 programming.

In 2023, the programme included 8 public events for 200 participants, guest speakers, and artist collaborators. This included former and current students, and friends of the School of Commons, as well as people who encountered SoC for the first time. Events took palace across 5 locations: Berlin, Izmir, Leiden, Porto, and the Sidvwaba Cave; as well as online, using hybrid methods of inclusion and experimenting with different modalities for supporting our wide peer-learning community

Additionally, in-depth interviews were published on the newsletter (this one and that one). This is fewer than was originally planned, and if Kit remains the coordinator, in-depth newsletter posts will remain 2-3 total, as most of their time is dedicated to supporting the events.

Finally, coordinating communication, including distributing these surveys and acting on feedback through the surveys or other channels was a key component of Kit's effort this year. This would continue to be done next year in a similar way, if Kit remains the coordinator.

Are you satisfied with Kit continuing to coordinate the SoC Alumn* program?

Are you satisfied with the compensation scheme for events?

The total 2024 budget is 5000CHF

Of this, 1500CHF is currently intended to support a larger collaborative event in the Netherlands and online, welcoming both alumns and the new 2024 batch, to further nourish our network; we will present this concept briefly at the townhall, and invite your feedback and participation.

All additional events will take place in the fall and will be compensated 500CHF; you can suggest your event below. All events must be open to the public and/or documented for later accessibility. Events featuring a guest artist or speaker are expected to compensate those guests with their part of the budget.

Are you satisfied with the compensation scheme for the coordinator and their scope of work?

The coordinator (currently, Kit) was in 2023 compensated 1000CHF for their work, from the 5000CHF budget.

In 2023, the work of the coordinator required 5-15 hours of work per month. About a third to a half of this effort was related to producing the newsletter content. This was much more time-intensive than originally planned, so the original intent of a letter every 2 months was not met.

In summary, a more realistic amount of work for 2024 would include: (1) managing 1-2 polls per year; (2) organizing and hosting an annual town hall; (3) curation and coordination of events; and (4) managing the SoC Alumn* newsletter, with potential deeper interview posts depending on demand.

If you would like to have your work featured in an interview on the SoC newsletter, please type some thoughts about what you would be interested in talking about. You can keep it very short and general.

Here are two examples of interviews: this one and that one.

If you are not interested in being included in the newsletter, feel free to skip this question.
Call for Events & Learning Commons Guest Ideas

To continue to the concept of the Learning Commons, I ask for volunteers to organize this event. You will be provided 500CHF*, which is expected to (mostly or all) go to support an invited guest speaker to broaden our perspective. Past guests have included Kameelah Janan Rasheed (2022) and Zeyno Pekünlü (2023). The format is open, and the event should ideally be in September or October.

To continue our focus on local events, you are welcome to suggest any idea for any event that explores peer learning that is public and/or documented for later access. You will be provided 500CHF* to put this event on, and it will be included in the SoC programme. I am happy to help with coordination, and if needed, event announcement and documentation.

Feel free to write your ideas below if you're interested, no matter how concrete or open they are! Otherwise, feel free to skip this question.

*500CHF is based on the 2023 budget concept. This may be revised in the townhall.
Any questions, ideas, or concerns which you would like to be address in the SoC Alumn* community in the next Town Hall (Feb 2024)?
