Reading Books on your Phone  - MLK Day, Monday Jan. 18, 2021
Beneficiaries – At Home and Abroad

Read / Record the narration of a book on MLK Day to be sent to English learners in Simbi Foundation partnered schools in developing African countries such as: Bidibidi Refugee Settlement, Jewish Communities in Uganda and other Refugee Settlements.

Students in the partnered schools are learning to read in English, and therefore, need practice listening to proficient readers. Students will have the opportunity to listen and read simultaneously to our recordings. This is a great teaching tool that not only exposes learners to proper pronunciation, but it provides us the opportunity to do a mitzvah (good deed)!

EASY Instructions:
1. In the browser on your smartphone, tablet or computer, go to this link: simbi.io
2. Select ‘Start Reading’
3. Choose a book from their selections or pick one from your own library. Select ‘Narrate’.
4. Before you start your recording, practice reading it out loud. Make sure you feel comfortable with the text. Consider your tone and the way you might want to change your voice for different characters. Remember, while it is important to be expressive, it is more important to be clear!
 5. As a test, record a few lines of your book or chapter. Remember to talk in a slow, clear and steady pace. Listen your test recording and consider:
    a. Am I too close to the microphone (causing a static-like noise)?
    b. Is it too loud or too quiet?
    c. Is there background noise?
    d. Did I put my phone on silent or might it buzz and interrupt my reading?
    e. Will my mouth get dry? Do I need some water on hand?
6. Now you’re ready to record! Start reading! Read slowly, enunciate and have fun!
7. After you have recorded yourself, select: ‘Finish’ and upload your recording.
