A SOMETIMES MAN
Olu was a "sometimes man".
Sometimes he worked for his brother. His brother had a clothes shop. There were shirts and coats and trousers on every wall. They were all colours -red and yellow and green, and black and grey. The name of Olu's brother was George. He got up with the sun. And he worked all day. He was never asleep. He went to bed in the middle of the night. He was at his work every morning by 6 o'clock. He was a rich man. "Work like me", he often said to Olu. "You sleep all day. You are never going to be rich like me."
Sometimes Olu worked in his mother's sister's garden. Her name was Mrs. Fufu. She was big and fat. She was a very happy woman. She had twelve children. Some were at school and some had good jobs. Mrs. Fufu had no husband. He was dead. So all day andevery day she worked in her garden. Every morning she went to town with some fruit and vegetables. She got money for them. Sometimes she put money in the Post Office.
"These are good days", she said to Olu. "But perhaps bad days are going to come again. Then I'm going to have my money from the Post Office. Look at my Post Office book. I have 53 dollars in it. I call that money my TOMORROW MONEY. But you never put any money in the Post Office, Olu. The bad days are going to come. Then what are you going to do? Where is your TOMORROW MONEY?"
Sometimes Olu worked in the school. The school had many trees. The school teacher, Mr. Olade, said, "Put a lot of water on the trees, Olu. The sun is very hot and they mustn't die". But Olu was very slow. At midday he said, "I'm very hot. I must have a little sleep". He closed his eyes.
