PLBL Application for GAANN Fellowship
GAANN: Training a New Generation of Plant Biologists for the Future of Agriculture and Ecosystem Sustainability

The Plant Biology (PLBL) Graduate Program is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for 23/24 GAANN (Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need) fellowships. GAANN fellowships are prestigious awards that are based on academic achievement, potential for success in an academic career, and financial need.

The long-range goal of the GAANN Fellowship Program is to enhance the capacity for teaching and research in plant biology at the state, regional, and national level. The PLBL GAANN program’s goal is to increase the number and diversity of trained plant biologists that are needed to address current and future challenges to food production, agricultural sustainability, renewable natural resources, and environmental sustainability. The GAANN program will create a cadre of PhDs prepared to train undergraduates, conduct research, and deploy innovative and effective teaching methods in post-secondary classes.

GAANN Fellowship Program Highlights:
- GAANN fellowships provide tuition and stipend of up to $34,000 plus tuition and fees per year (based on financial need) for full-time students currently enrolled in the PLBL Ph.D. Program. GAANN fellowships will be awarded for up to 4 quarters (F, W, S, and Summer).

- Applicants should have a keen interest in a career in both teaching and research at the university level. All GAANN fellows will receive additional training to become effective university educators. Besides performing GAANN-funded research with their respective PIs, our GAANN fellows are expected to serve as TAs for at least 3 quarters during their PhD program. To enhance their teaching and mentoring efforts, GAANN fellows will enroll in a teaching pedagogy class and a research mentoring class. In addition to the Teaching Assistant Development Program (TADP) which is administered by the UCR Graduate Division and which is mandatory for all TAs, GAANN fellows will need to take two additional courses: The two-unit BPSC 200C course “Mentoring in the Life Sciences” as well as the one-unit BIOL 301 course “Teaching Biology at the College Level”

Eligibility:

- Students who are US citizens or permanent residents and currently enrolled in the PLBL Ph.D. Program are eligible for GAANN fellowships. Applicants should be committed to pursuing a PhD and ultimately a career as a university professor. PLBL PhD students in their second through fifth years will be considered.
