Are you a student in grades K-8 with a passion for storytelling and a love for picture books? Here's your chance to showcase your talents! The Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (FLTRP) in collaboration with The Chinese Language Teachers Association of California (CLTAC) and Level Learning is excited to announce the Picture Book Reading Contest.

What's It About?

This Contest provides a unique platform for young students to engage with Chinese language and culture through the art of storytelling. It's not just a reading competition; it's an opportunity to bring stories to life!

Who Can Participate?

The competition is open to all K-8 students. Whether you're a beginner or a proficient speaker, we encourage you to participate and express your creativity.

Participation Guidelines:

  1. Record Your Entry: Select a Chinese language picture book published by The Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (FLTRP). Record a video adhering to the stated guidelines on next page.
  2. Submit Your Entry: Upload your video to YouTube. Complete the submission by filling out the provided form with the video link. Ensure your submission is in by December 20th, 2023.

Video Requirements:

Format:

  • Video Orientation: landscape -- Hold your recording device (like a smartphone or camera) horizontally, not vertically. Ensure that the longer sides of the device are parallel to the ground.
  • Equipment: Use either professional video equipment or a smartphone. The video must be stable and clear, showcasing both the narrator(s)/group and the book.
  • Audio: Deliver the content in Mandarin Chinese with a clear and loud voice, ensuring there is no background noise.
  • Structure: The video should include a personal introduction (no more than 1 minute), a brief overview of your Chinese language learning background (native or non-native, no more than 1 minute), an announcement of the book's title and author, followed by the reading/telling of the content (no longer than 6 minutes).
  • Duration: The entire video should not exceed 8 minutes.
  • Name of your video: Name of the Story_School Name_Last Name_First Name.

Content:

  • Material: Utilize a Chinese picture book published by The Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (FLTRP) as your material.
  • Delivery: Choose to read, narrate, or perform the content in Mandarin Chinese.
    • Reading: Adhere closely to the content of the book.
    • Narrating: Stay faithful to the original story, enhancing it with descriptions of illustrations, scenes, or characters' emotions.
    • Performing: Begin with the book title and author's name. The performance should be consistent with the original content, and it is not necessary to display the book during the performance.
  • Integrity: Respect the original work by maintaining its integrity. Do not edit, modify, or create derivative works from the original content.
