Subcommittee Time Commitment (per month): The subcommittee commitment is roughly 2-4 hours per month (two 1-hour meetings + 1-2 hours of "in between meetings" action items, per month).
Events Subcommittee: Subcommittee Mission:
Coordinates speakers, costs, travel, refreshments, and venue of each event. Works to arrange for registration, distribution of any relevant attendees' materials and contractual requirements. Subcommittee Charge: Plan and organize 2-4 events per year focusing on the central mission and story of UHE, which is centering the voices of directly impacted people around matters of increasing access to education.
Federal Level Advocacy Subcommittee: Subcommittee Mission: Create a sustainable support structure for the implementation of HEP, devoting resources with deep system knowledge and cultural competency. Subcommittee Charge: (1) Serve as collectors of field inputs and priorities; (2) Document and share stories of barriers; (3) Prioritize field requests for federal action.
Media & Messaging Subcommittee: Subcommittee Mission: To convey the importance of the efforts of Unlock Higher Ed and its advocacy at the state and federal level in support of legislation furthering higher education opportunities for currently and formerly incarcerated students. Subcommittee Charge: To broadcast the endeavors of Unlock Higher Ed's members and organizations, and to build awareness of efforts made by individuals, and state and federal programs by frequent dissemination of information.
Membership & Fundraising: Subcommittee Mission: To provide services and resources to the members of the coalition. Subcommittee Charge: Identify and recruit potential members. Engage and retain current members. Provide support and input on policies. Determine how to handle a clash of ideas by members of the committees. Design membership levels. Seek Funding for the coalition.
State Level Advocacy Subcommittee: Subcommittee Mission: Address the need for advocacy in ban-the-box policies in college admissions and advocacy regarding what programs qualify for Pell funding and make sure the DOCs don't decide which programs get access, prioritizing state institutions, with no regard for quality. Subcommittee Charge: Work with relevant stakeholders to pursue the sub-committee's mission.
