Why is this mural being created?
The East Harriet Farmstead Neighborhood Association’s Green Spaces and Places Committee formed a Taskforce in 2021 to raise awareness about clean water issues by creating a storm drain mural in the neighborhood. Activities in 2021 included a competitive search process that led to selection of an amazing Minneapolis artist, Tomie Topbear, and forming of an exciting partnership with Barton Elementary. To celebrate the partnership, cultivate student engagement, and ensure high-levels of pedestrian traffic at the mural site, the Taksforce selected the intersection at W. 43rd St. and Colfax Ave S. as the mural’s location. The City of Minneapolis approved the location in February 2022. Once we have a mural design finalized later this spring, we will go through an approval process with the Minneapolis Arts Commission and apply for the required permits from Public Works to ensure public safety during the mural painting. We anticipate the mural painting will take place in summer or early fall, with community celebration to be held once the mural is completed!
