Teaching & Learning Talk | Complex Learning with “Authentic” Assessments

Thursday, December 14  // 12:30 - 1:30 pm
Location: Ford Classroom, Swem Library & via Zoom
**Lunch Provided with RSVP by 5 PM on Monday, Dec 11**

Please join us for this rescheduled Teaching & Learning Talk (TLT) led by Dr. Chris Gareis (School of Education). In this session, we will explore performance-based approaches to learning and assessment.

Assessing our students’ learning isn’t typically what we tend to love about university-level teaching. But would you feel different if you were more confident that your assessments were credible, meaningful, and even “authentic” representations of our students’ learning? In this session, we’ll look at the myriad, creative, engaging ways that you assess, or would like to assess, your students’ complex learning using performance-based assessments. We’ll also take a closer look at several principles for designing performance-based assessments, and some pitfalls to avoid when creating them. We aim to strengthen the validity and reliability of such assessments while keeping the authenticity, engagement, and even the fun that you’ve already baked into them! Join us as we take a step or two toward building better assessments of and for learning!
