In 1956 the Wellman Community Club, recognized the importance of a youth-oriented recreation area. A committee was organized to oversee a project to acquire a skating rink center for Wellman. A 50x136 rink was available in Columbus Junction, so the Community Club set about raising $5000 for a down payment on the building, skates and equipment. Total cost expected was about $12,500 for dismantling, transporting, and reassembling the rink.
The City of Wellman took over operations of the rink in 2004 with Teresa Lampe managing until her retirement in October 2021. Brenda Reasor was hired as manager in November 2021. Reasor has worked hard to get the word out about the rink, using social media and hosting special events. Opening the facility more frequently has provided revenue to make crucial repairs and improvements on this memorable building. So many memories have been and will continue to be made at this historic facility with the help of contributors like you.
