Learning Event #9 - You Shall Not Steal
What is the 7th Commandment? *
Martin Luther writes in the Small Catechism that this means that "We should fear and love God so that we do not take our neighbor's money or possessions, or get them in any dishonest way, but help them to improve and protect their possessions and income."  How do you protect your neighbors' possessions and income through your actions? *
Below you will find some scenarios.  On a scale of 1 (very wrong) to 5 (very right), what do you think of each of these? *
1 (Very Wrong)
2 (Wrong)
3 (Neutral)
4 (Right)
5 (Very Right)
You take a test, and tell your friend what questions were on the test.
You take someone else's homework and copy it.
You cheat on your spouse/partner, knowing that they will never find out.
You bribe someone to help you get into the college you want.
You take a class to help improve your SAT or ACT scores so you can get into the college you want.
You say you are older than you really are.
You use a fake ID to purchase alcohol or tobacco.
You use drugs (cocaine, meth, heroin).
You see that your friend is drunk at a school dance and don't turn them in.
You tell the parents of an anorexic friend that they have an eating disorder, when the friend has asked you to keep it a secret.
You hear your friend making racist or homophobic jokes and do not stop them.
You see a car accident but don't stop to help because you're in a hurry.
You keep the extra change when the cashier makes a mistake.
You see a homeless person on the street and ignore them when they ask for money or food.
You find a wallet with an ID in it and don't try to return it.
You can have any wish come true, but it means a random person in the world will die.
Choose 5 of the values from the list below that are most important to you. *
Required
Why did you choose the values that you did?  What makes them important to you? *
Was there ever a time where something you valued was stolen from you?  What happened?  How did you feel?  What did you do about it? *
We have a new Little Free Pantry outside of our church.  Occasionally, we have problems with kids taking things out of the box and leaving them on the school playground, or opening packages and pouring them on the ground outside the church.  Is this stealing, even though all of the items were donated?  Why or why not? *
