IGA Lecture – Aodhán O’Gogáin (NUIG, iCRAG) – The Jarrow Amphibians and Ireland’s Carboniferous Coal Swamp Ecosystem
Abstract:
The Jarrow fossil assemblage in County Kilkenny preserves a rare and diverse fauna of early amphibians (and fish) in the Carboniferous coals and shales of County Kilkenny. However, despite the site’s significance for amphibian evolution, it is poorly known. In this talk, I will look at the different animals that populated the estuaries, rivers and swamps of Carboniferous Kilkenny and present micro-computed tomography and 3D visualisations of the amphibians to reveal their taxonomy and highlight their importance in understanding early amphibian evolution and ecology. I will also look at the palaeoecology of these animals, the palaeoenvironments in which they lived, and show the unique way in which these animals have been preserved.
