You know what the Moon looks like, but have you ever seen its craters up close? And have you seen the rings of Saturn? You might have noticed, while cycling around Zernike, that the Bernoulliborg building has its very own observatory: the Blaauw Observatory. This dome is home to one of the largest telescopes in the Netherlands, the Gratama Telescope of the Ritchey-Chrétien type (a smaller version of the large professional telescopes that stand on remote mountain peaks), which is ideal for making high-quality photographs of objects located deep in the universe.

On 10 December, SIB members will have the chance to visit the observatory. We will be shown around the observatory, have a presentation about the astronomical research that is carried out there, and – if the weather allows – we will even be able to use the telescope and gaze at the planets and stars ourselves!
