Seats in the Graduate Student Senate are filled by annual general elections (held beginning of the Fall semester for all seats) and special elections for vacant seats (held on occasion, usually at least one at the beginning of the Spring semester). Application deadline for the Fall 2020 General Election has been Wednesday August 26th at 5PM!
Besides getting elected to the body by your peers within the department, the elected Graduate President can nominate individuals to vacant seats (and up to 5 at-large seats) on a rolling basis. These nominees assume the respective office after receiving approval of the Senate.
Apply to be a Senator and represent your department in the Graduate Student Senate (GSS)! This form is an application to receive a presidential nomination to a vacant seat.
The GSS is a vital part of the Graduate Student Government Association (GSGA) and relies on passionate, dedicated and driven graduate students to improve our experience here at Georgia Tech. Running for Senate is a great way to get involved in Georgia Tech at many levels and help address the issues that we all share as graduate students.
What's involved in being a Senator:
1) Deciding how the mandatory student activity fee is used: Senators administer the annual Student Activity Fee budget of more than 2 million dollars and hear from organizations requesting funding. This happens during mandatory Senate sessions every Tuesday from 11AM to 1PM.
2) Developing and implementing institute wide policies: GSGA has been pivotal in many campus-wide policies and referendums including restructuring of Qualifying Exams and increases in annual stipends
3) Engaging with students, faculty, staff, and administrators in your department to find out what major issues they have and working with the GSGA and Administrators to tackle those issues
4) Advocating and voting for graduate student interests on institutional committees: Senators have direct connections to the President’s Office and President’s Cabinet, serving on a range of committees involved with student health insurance, technology fees, faculty benefits, campus art, and everything in between.
Nomination Process:
1) Check the current GSS roster if a seat you are eligible for (i.e. your department or an at-large seat) is vacant HERE (under 'full roster'):

3) Possibly expect an email from the Graduate Chief of Staff with some follow up questions regarding your eligibility.
4) Expect an email from the President setting up a meeting to talk about the nomination.
5) After having obtained the nomination, attend a GSS meeting and have your appointment voted upon.
6) If GSS voted to approve your appointment, you will be sworn-in right away and can participate as Senator.
Feel free to reach out if you have any questions to Graduate Chief of Staff Marc Muehlberg (
