What to Expect / Preparation
Dance:
  • Auditionees be split into groups and taught a short group dance.
  • Wear appropriate gear for dancing (comfortable shoes etc).
  • Bring water!
Singing:
  • Auditionees will be split into groups and perform a short piece of a song from the show.
  • For male roles, prepare the first verse and chorus of 'Holiday' and perform solo.
  • For female roles, prepare the first verse and chorus of '21 Guns' and perform solo.
  • For ensemble without a featured solo, prepare the first verse and chorus of 'Holiday' (you will have the option of a group audition, if preferred).
  • Be sure to prepare the broadway version of the song, not the one from the original American Idiot album!
Characters:
  • Auditionees for principal roles will be asked to read a small excerpt from the show.
  • See character descriptions below for a few details about each role :)
Character Descriptions
  • Johnny: ‘Jesus of Suburbia’ – Fiery and impulsive. Wants to change the world around him for the better. Moves to the city.
  • Will: Laid-back and witty. Like Johnny/Tunny, dissatisfied with the state of the world and his surroundings. Stays at home to raise his child with Heather.
  • Tunny: An All-American boy, but disenfranchised. Feels destined for something greater than what’s around him. Moves to the city, then joins the military.
  • Whatsername: Intelligent, daring. Angry at the injustice that exists both within her own life and in the wider world. Meets Johnny in the city.
  • Heather: Unafraid to stand up for herself and her beliefs, determined to stick by them at any cost. Stays at home with Will.
  • Extraordinary Girl: Compassionate, focused, ambitious, and driven to use her life to make real change. Meets Tunny in the military.
  • St. Jimmy: A representation of Johnny’s inner demons – the devil on his shoulder.
  • Favorite Son: A representation of the United States Armed Forces – two-faced, calculated, persuasive, sinister, powerful.
