Safe Routes to School | The School Crossing Guard Requirements & Application Form

Welcome to the Safe Routes to School project !

The Safe Routes to School Project aims to encourage walking to the Naxxar Primary school among children aged 4-11, as a form of daily exercise and alternative to the private car.

Three routes have been identified within 1km around Naxxar Primary school and can be consulted on this online map: bit.ly/SafeWalkingMapMalta (copy paste this link in your browser).

We are recruiting volunteers to act as School Crossing Guards (SCG) in order to increase the roads safety. The role of the School Crossing Guard is to help children and their parents to safely cross the streets along the various road crossing points. The SCGs will receive a certificate of attendance and for services rendered at the end of the pilot project. In kind benefits (such as vouchers) will be offered to the SCGs.

Volunteers who wish to participate as crossing guards must meet the following conditions:
- To be over 18 years old. No upper age limit applies;
- To present a good police conduct (to hand in);
- To have a general knowledge of the Highway Code;
- To be physically able to move on to and off the road;
- To be able to work in all weather conditions;
- To be able to communicate well (English and/or Maltese)
- To be able to judge and deal with emergency traffic situations, putting the safety of pedestrians and themselves first;
- To be able to hold a Stop Sign in one hand;
- To attend the training workshop (dates to be defined in November). All School Crossing Guards (SCG) will be subject to a training workshop, in order to provide basic training and clearly define the role, responsibilities & procedures required to volunteer as a SCG. The training is provided by Project Aegle Foundation where the correct crossing procedure will be explained and tested.
