Immersion East Side is an academic immersion program, involving a summer field experience and a Fall semester 3-credit course (with Justice and Field 1 Core Attributes). The field experience takes place May 18 – May 29, 2020 (including Memorial Day). During the Fall semester students will develop, plan, and execute a community-based project inspired by the summer field experience and seminar readings.

General Overview:
The field experience involves visits to Black churches and religious communities, educational institutions, disinvested neighborhoods, grass-roots community initiatives, cultural arts and performance venues, and historic East Side eateries and businesses. During the field experience, students live in-community on-campus, engage in group activities, reflections, and other academic activities.

Unlike other programs, our focus is not on service but rather developing a well-educated solidarity cultivated through listening to community partners and better understanding how East Side communities define themselves, their past, and their hopes for the future.

Please Note:  We can only accept 8 participants.  

Cost:  
Undergraduate participants will be charged $250. Scholarships are available.

Academic Credit:  
3-credit Fall course for Core Curriculum Credit (Justice and Field 1)

Requirements:
All applicants must:

1.  have at least sophomore standing as of Fall 2019,
2.  be in good academic standing,
3.  be able to move about, stand, or sit for extended periods
4.  be willing to live respectfully and with engagement in community,
5.  be expected to participate fully and with enthusiasm in daily reflection sessions,
6.  be interested in and committed to the ethical and spiritual values of social justice,
7.  be open to diverse cultural practices and experiences.
