Movement & Music Salon
Welcome to The Aangan Lab's 2023 Movement & Music Salon application!

The Aangan Lab is a program for the intentional development of artistic works. The Lab provides opportunity for artists to meet fellow creators, mentors, and audiences to learn, discuss, collaborate, and ultimately re-imagine the creative process.

Aangan co-founders and panelists will select up to 4 movement artists to be paired with 4 musicians to develop a 5-minute presentation that will be showcased on June 3rd, 2023.

In addition to giving artists an opportunity to collaborate and make new work, the Movement & Music Salon will provide multiple opportunities for feedback from mentors, peers, and eventually audience members in the fine arts space.

Criteria for participation in the Movement & Music Salon:

1. Applications must be submitted online by 11:59pm ET on Wednesday February 8th, 2023.

2. Artists can apply as individuals or collectives.

3. Must be working in the field of music or movement.

4. Primary applicant must be a South Asian person practicing any music or movement form or a non-South Asian person practicing a South Asian movement or music form.

5. The applicant must be the generative artist or have permission from the generative artist for all submitted samples (i.e., you have the rights to the work). If applying as collaborators, all work samples must be the creative work generated by all collaborators applying.

6. Must be able to fully participate in the creation lab. This requires the collaborative pairs to submit one work-in-progress video by April 5th, 2023 and attend a Zoom showing on April 27th, 2023.

7. Must be available to present work in New York City on Saturday June 3rd, 2023.

8. Final work in progress showing must be of 3-5 minutes in length.

In looking at work samples, panelists consider whether the artist's creative work is and/or has the potential to be:

1. Compelling—offering distinctive vision and authentic voice;
2. Deeply considered and imaginative;
3. Executed with attention to craft and technical proficiency in the form(s)/aesthetic(s)/genre(s)
4. Effective and engaging in its use of technique and aesthetics to invite viewers to question, discover and explore the artists’ unique ideas and perspectives
5. Taking creative risks by expanding or questioning, experimenting with or re-imagining conventional artistic forms.

The panel will also consider the alignment among all application elements.

Please note:
Selected artists will receive honorariums of $200 upon completion of the creation lab and presentation at the salon on June 3, 2022. This opportunity does not offer travel and lodging reimbursement. Applicants will be notified of their selection in early March 2023.
