Seal Paddle on the Merrimack River: September 25th 2021, 7:30-11 AM
Hosted by Merrimack River Watershed Council (MRWC) & Plum Island Kayak
We'll start our adventure from Plum Island Kayak in downtown Newburyport and paddle down river on the outgoing tide to Badger's Rocks where dozens of seals typically gather to rest. We will be joined by a naturalist from the Seacoast Science Center, who can educate us about the unique wildlife in this area. At Badger's Rock we may encounter Harbor seals and Grey seals sunning themselves or bobbing in the water. On the way, we may see seals and various birds such as cormorants, terns, sandpipers, turkey vultures, ospreys, and maybe even a bald eagle! After a brief stop for a stretch and a light snack, the river will "turn" and we'll ride the incoming tide back to Newburyport.
The cost of this event is $65. (Cancellations more than 7 days from the trip date will get 50% refund. Cancellations within 7 days of the trip date are not refundable.)
Youth ages 12-18 can attend if accompanied with a parent or guardian. Sorry, no youth under age 12.
PLEASE FILL OUT THE TWO WAIVER FORMS AND SUBMIT PAYMENT AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS FORM. YOU WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED REGISTERED UNTIL YOU DO.
How to Prepare: We recommend sunglasses, a hat with a visor, sunscreen, a windbreaker and (in case you get wet) a change of clothes. Your feet will probably get wet; water shoes or water boots are most comfortable. Please do not wear flip-flops. Dry bags, zip-lock bags or plastic trash bags are great to keep your "extras" dry. Snacks and a thermos of something warm to drink are also recommended. All boats are touring kayaks with plenty of space for storage.
PLEASE ARRIVE BY 7:30 SHARP, because this paddle is dependent on the tides.
