The Matrix of Jewish Identity
Who, or what, is a Jew - and how? These questions of status are personally charged, existentially weighty, and politically resonant. We’ll gather as a group who, first and foremost, cares about the strong and tender claims we each make to Jewishness, and about one another. And on that foundation we’ll explore the contemporary matrix of Jewish identity - in our lives, in the world at large, and in Yale’s Jewish community. Categories of race and gender, Whiteness and immigration, law and family, belief, and obligation will guide our exploration. This work will culminate in a collaborative project to intervene in and transform our own community - the content and purpose to be determined by the group itself.

We'll meet biweekly, beginning after fall break, at a time chosen by the group.

What do you bring to the questions of Jewish identity  - pain, experience, knowledge? You might want to share about your family, experiences at school or work, or in Jewish institutions. *
What are you hoping to learn in this group? What do you want to learn, and what kind of change would you want to make in the Slifka community? *
How do you most want to contribute to this group? What kind of group participant are you? How do you need to grow to be a supportive and effective advocate for racial justice? *
We are committed to accessibility for all who wish to participate. What, if anything, do you need for this to feel like an accessible learning environment (closed captioning,  large font material, written material in advance, etc.)
