Rossie Hutchinson Improv Class, a Virtual Workshop
Workshop name: Intermediate Improv: Crosses, Cabins, Colors, and Combinations
Teacher: Rossie Hutchinson
When: Saturday, 7 November 2020, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Cost: $35/member; $55/non-member
Workshop description: Repeating but changing patterns; establishing and altering flows; pleasing and surprising yourself; going wild but lining it all up! This class takes students who are already familiar with piecing improvisationally and teaches them Rossie’s approach to three beautiful improv blocks--the log cabin, the double plus, and the scrappy plus. In addition to teaching improv blocks, this class includes modules on color stories, color arrangements, and combining odd-sized improv blocks into a quilt top. After students have made one of each block, they are coached as they design their own quilt using one or more of those blocks and begin work on that quilt.
Workshop supplies needed:
Students should bring:
Sewing machine (only straight stitch is needed)
Neutral colored thread (white, off-white, soft gray)
Scissors or snips
Rotary cutter
Rotary ruler 3x18” or larger
Rotary cutting mat 12x18” or larger
Fabric for morning and afternoon (described below)
Additional Materials: Computer or other device with Zoom app installed
Fabric:
1. Morning fabric needs: In the morning, everyone in this class will be making three different blocks (see below). You can bring different fabric for each type of block or make them all for the same set of fabrics.
If you do not have a stash of fabrics that you are pulling from, I recommend buying a bundle (fat quarters or fat eighths) of pre-matched fabrics that run from light to dark, along with a yard of a light solid.
If you are pulling from a stash, here’s what you should grab:
For the log cabin block: A fat quarter of a solid. Approximately 8 different fabrics that coordinate and can be cut into strips at least 10” long.
For the double plus block: Two pieces of cotton quilting fabric (one light, one medium or dark) that can be cut to rectangles of the same size. (approximately 8” wide and 11” tall recommended.)
For the scrappy plus block: A fat quarter of a solid. Approximately 8 different fabrics that coordinate and can be cut into strips at least 10” long. We will need only a small pieces from most fabrics, so scraps can work here.
2. Afternoon fabric needs: In the afternoon, students will continue working with a block or blocks of their choice. Students should bring a variety of fabrics so that they have options—ten fat quarters or ten fat eighths of pre-matched fabrics that run from light to dark, along with a yard of a white, off-white, or light gray solid should serve. Solids and prints will both work, but I recommend choosing prints that aren’t too big; most of your prints should be blenders and stash builders.
You do not need to cut into your fabric before class, but you might want to iron out any stubborn wrinkles so that you can get to sewing more quickly.
