Musical Notation Platform Survey

This survey should take no longer than 10 minutes to complete.
There is no minimum level of understanding or experience of notated music required to participate in this survey and you are encouraged to answer all questions, even if you feel your opinion or knowledge of the subject is not strong.

This survey forms part of a postgraduate research project on the impact of the internet and digitisation on the sheet music publishing industry. The goal of the project is to analyse consumer behaviours and industry trends to work out how well publishers have adapted to the needs of their audiences in the digital age.
Participation in this survey is voluntary, and offers an opportunity to share your personal views on the platforms distributing transcribed music for personal performance. Participating in this research may not benefit you directly, but it will help us to learn more about the needs of both professional and amateur musicians in the current digital climate.


Privacy information
Your personal results will not be shared with anyone; this survey is being conducted for academic purposes. The data gathered from this survey will be presented in an MA research project which will be read by examiners and shared with students. It may be used for future presentations, research papers, or journal articles. No identifying information will be shared. You may skip any questions you don’t want to answer and you may end the survey at any time.
There are no significant risks in participating in the survey. Any information you provide will be held confidentially, and there is no obligation to provide identifying data. Demographic questions are asked on the behalf of the researcher for sampling purposes only. Your survey data will be anonymous and held on a secure server accessible only to the researcher; if you choose to provide your email address, this will be kept separate from your survey responses. You may choose to withdraw consent at any time by emailing the researcher at the below address, and your data will be deleted.

Important Note
The questions in this survey will make reference to the format of "written music". This constitutes any visual transcription of performed music, generally for the purpose of recreating the music in a personal or professional performance setting. This term is intended as a blanket designation to cover common formats such as sheet music, guitar tablature, piano roll, and solfège, but can be extended to include any form of written musical notation. It does not refer to audio formats such as MP3, nor to audiovisual aids such as piano lessons or YouTube tutorials. For the purposes of this research, we are not including transcribed lyrics.
