Call for Proposals: NAEA 2021 Research Preconference
Inside/Outside: Connections, Curiosities, and Questions in Art Education will focus on areas of inquiry that explore connections in and outside of the educational milieus that intersect with the field of art education. The 2021 Research Preconference is organized by the NAEA Research Commission, generously supported by the National Art Education Foundation, and open to all.

The conference will be held on Tuesday February 23, 2021 and Wednesday February 24, 2021 and will run from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (Eastern) each day with sessions including plenary sessions of invited panelists, Short-form Presentations and Research Circles along with opportunities for discussion and interaction. Short-form Presentations, each will consist of 20 slides running for 20 seconds each (for a total of 6 minutes 40 seconds), presentations will be grouped in 50 minute sessions. Research Circles will also be 50 minutes long and structured as interactive, facilitated discussions.

Both Short-form Presentations and Research Circles will be held using Zoom Meetings. Zoom meetings allow presenters and participants the ability to share audio, video, and on-screen content as needed. A meeting host will be assigned by the Research Commission to assist with overall facilitation of the session.

Overview
There are two proposal formats: Short-form Presentations and Research Circles. Both formats can be delivered live or ‘mock live’. If choosing ‘mock live’ presenters must play their own video and be present for the related discussion.

Short-form Presentations, submitted by individuals, consist of 20 slides related to the preconference theme, timed for 20 seconds per slide, 6 minutes and 40 seconds in total. Several will be grouped together, presented in succession, and followed by a discussion.

Research Circles, submitted by two to six presenters provide brief, interrelated presentations and pose questions relevant to the preconference theme during a 50-minute period. Using the circle as an analogy of dialog, part of the Research Circle proposal must address how the panel will engage the audience in discussion and/or other form of interaction.

Proposal Requirements
Successful proposals will:
          ● Address the theme of Inside/Outside: Connections, Curiosities and Questions in Art Education.
Proposals need to address one or more of the following questions, or be clearly related:
          ● How do our individual experiences (as insiders), affect what we know and communicate to those within and outside our institutions, organizations, and field(s)? How does that influence the issues and research questions we pursue?
          ● How do we navigate being both an insider and outsider in our own teaching contexts? How do we navigate being both an insider and outsider in our field?
          ● What is our responsibility as educators to conduct research that highlights the importance of art education to those outside the field? In what ways are we communicating our findings to those inside and outside of our field and how might that impact our research questions, methods, discussion and advocacy efforts?
          ● How do our individual and collective research needs connect? How do they resonate, complement, and extend one another? Where do we find tensions?
          ● How do our individual questions and curiosities impact the larger story of research in our field(s)? What do we learn about ourselves while following a line of inquiry?
          ● How do questions emerge, shift, change, and lead to more questions?

Proposals must adhere to one of the following formats:

          ● Title

          ● Presenter Names and Affiliations
          ● Program Description (30 Word Maximum)
