(New York State Energy Research and Development Authority) to conduct a study in a portion of Ithaca's Southside neighborhood to determine whether a community geothermal system would be feasible.
A community geothermal system has the potential to
provide an entire neighborhood with safe, affordable, sustainable heating and cooling and hot water. The system typically consists of underground pipes containing water that circulates and collects heat from the ground which is a constant temperature year round. Each home or building connected to the system would contain a heat pump which would take the heat from the ground and condense it and distribute it inside the building. In the summer, the heat pumps would provide air conditioning.
We are collecting information from residents of the study area to help us to model the heating needs of all the buildings. The information collected is for study purposes only. Thanks for helping with this important study!
